1. What we stand for!
- think about it for a minute... lifeguard competitions, people at them, everyone leaves a competition HAPPY and wanting to go to another? That's what it's about. It's about finding a group of lifeguards who truly want to compete and be merry at the same time.
2. Why lifeguard competitions
- lets improve our guarding skills (duh) and have a social aspect to our lives - yes for as little as $150 in one weekend, you too can enjoy travelling to another province, meeting fifty people (at least.. and this is all dependent on how good the social is!), swim in a different pool, have at least three adrenaline rushes in one day, stay in an economy hotel, mentor other lifeguards and juniors, and hell FUN?
3. Money? Committment?
- hell no! My plan is for this to be a MINIMAL committment kind of thing - two very casual practices a month that are composed of some swimming, some water rescue, and some first aid tweaking. When I say tweaking, I mean taking your regular NLS treatment of a nosebleed and turning it into a nosebleed as the result of a mass casualty car accident where the nosebleed is the easy part of your day - never mind the five spinals and the decapitated head (ahhh I love it). The rest of the month it's up to your team or group of friends to organize your own practices/fitness schedule. It's highly ENCOURAGED by Rescue Regina that you maintain your swimming skills and improve them throughout the competition season. So make it a plan to hop into the pool twice a week and do some solid working on your strokes and abilities. Because lifeguards are SUPPOSED to be in shape and ABLE to swim better than the patrons.
- Oh yeah, the money thing. See, the one thing that urks me about being in SR is that it costs an arm and a leg to go to competitions and be a member. So here's the deal - for the first little while, your membership is a t-shirt. You identify with the club, and you're a member. You don't even have to live in Regina heck - you could live in TimBuckTu and just show up twice a month, and that would be cool. Or just show up to competitions. I don't care - just be part of something. There's always recruiting your friends to come out and be victims and such... see you can practice on your own at home!! Anyhoo... you buy a shirt, pay for your admission to the pool, and I'll call you a proud Regina Rescue Member.
- Competitions can be expensive - team fees usually range between $100 - $200... nationals costs $1000 per team. So you need to think in terms of splitting the costs - ie. you each pitch in the dividend for the team fee, share a cheap hotel room/stay with friends/BILLETING!! (ohhh I love this). Split gas, eat at McD's for the weekend, make your own alcohol, whatever you need to do to get to a comp - DO IT, DO IT NOW. He he... Pat's gonna love this.
4. Is there a future?
- Think of this.... a team with four senior teams (so twelve senior members, with their NLS and higher awards). Let's say we end up getting a group of juniors from age 6 to age 15 (let's give it a number of 60 or so). The seniors run lessons for these juniors - let's get Rookie/Ranger/Star and Junior Lifeguard Club action going once a week... these kids pay LESS because it's not run through the City (it's all done privately, maybe we rent pool space or heck just throw them on the wall at public swim), the seniors don't get paid BUT gain volunteer experience, and the INCOME pays for guard comps and t-shirts and spine boards and 02 kits and first aid supplies... is that a concept? Credits to Chris for his team and their success with this. Anyway... it's all a dream, but if Saskatoon can do it, can't Regina?

So this is what I want:

Names of people who are interested in competing at guard comps and wearing a green shirt that says REGINA RESCUE on it.
People who can commit to one day a month for now, until things become more stable and organized and such.
Teams willing to compete at Prairies under the name REGINA RESCUE

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-02-21T05:59:45Z</dcterms:modified>
